Learning to BASE jumping is a long way, full of pitfalls which often requires above all a lot of determination and lucidity, but also reflections.
The term B.A.S.E. is an acronym, meaning B for Building, A for antenna, S for span and E for earth. It brings together all the places that you can jump without using an aircraft (aircraft, microlight, paragliding, hot air balloon). This activity is distinguished from his cousin skydiving, to be a separate activity but extreme. Indeed, the practitioner has only one parachute but certainly suitable as emergency parachute. It would be useless here because the jumps are often a much shorter time and the margin of parachute opening is much smaller. If it is common parachute jump with a height of 4000m, leaving a margin of 1000m before the opening of the parachute, BASE jumping the heights can vary from 50m to 2000m leaving only a minimum height above ground, as as the parachutist BASE jumpers like the also make the most of the freefall (when possible of course).
BASE jumping has includes all the attributes of an extreme sport, commitment, accuracy, completeness, or any errors or negligence can mean injury or death. This does not make an elite sport or elected but a particular sport that requires great rigor, many physical, psychological, motor and cognitive, but also knowledge of specific and often very large capacities self-analysis and questioning. Because the only danger in BASE jumping is the practitioner himself. There is no chance, there are just errors and mistakes that can lead to accidents. This is a very subtle that it is often difficult to integrate, especially when time and practice, trust is built up sometimes become dogmatic (which is working, and has always worked for me, so what I do is right and I continue). But sometimes, gear could failed (wing inflate failure)…
In France, the practice of « Paralpinisme » is only focused on natural sites (cliffs and mountains) and recognized by the FFCAM France (French Federation of Alpine Clubs and Mountain) whose members (members of any French Alpine Club) receive accident insurance and liability insurance (like any other mountain sports: paragliding, hiking, mountaineering, climbing, canyoning …). This practice is represented by the association of Paralpinisme, which is not intended to federation, but practitioners of representation and defense of free access to the sites of practice. But generally we are talking about BASE jumping, the term Paralpinisme (originally used for paragliding in the mountains before the above-mentioned association did adopt). « Paralpinisme » is therefore used in France, this being a way to distinguish the activity « nature and the mountains » (for it to be recognized by the FFCAM: « Association of Paralpinisme ») to other practices considered « illegal » in the eyes of the authorities (as jumps of bridges, buildings, antennas, because often « denied access » and therefore treated as crimes … even if it is not allowed to jump into the void to make a free fall!). As in all sports, some practitioners specialize or have preferences (Paralpinisme pure or BASE), but historically « everything jump » BASE is the root historical (or cultural) and it is also possible to obtain BASE number # xxxx ( BASE number ) when you jumped the 4 different objects of the word BASE.
In France BASE jumping is particularly closed, often tinged with elitism and conservatism. While it is easy and legal to buy equipment (and made in France), it is much more complicated when research school be welcome with open arms. Start in the sport considered « extreme » and dangerous is not easy and the road is often long and even chaotic. It is traditional to find a mentor, ie an experienced person who is willing to share his knowledge and support to risk and to initiate a beginner. But it is difficult depending on where you live to find practitioners and most importantly the « right » person to be initiated. In addition, this mentor, all experienced he is, he will be sufficiently competent « educational » to teach his pupil without putting at risk? His teaching will they be strong enough and complete to enable the student to develop healthily in the future when no longer with him?
« Never act in haste, be careful at every step. And from the beginning, think this could be the end. » Edward Whymper
In recent years, many schools have emerged in Europe, providing education and quality support, although there is more for improvement. In France there no degree exist to date and with the main drawback of being unable to find insurance… in this legal vacuum is an obstacle to the development of schools in France. Also the best sites to start being some bridges (Moreover highway and forbidden to pedestrians), schools find themselves in a double penalty. But a day will come when a group of motivated people will knock on the door of the French state to request recognition of this profession and thus to benefit from insurance to teach the sport as well as their European neighbors. This is just a matter of time, but it is quite possible that Europe will accelerate things by putting the French state meet its obligations to harmonize, since schools already exist in Spain, Italy, England, Austria, Norway and Switzerland, the United States … it is the oldest.
You dream … but BASE jumping is probably not for you?!
Why go through a school or instructor?to be initiated under the best conditions to learn the basics and fundamentals of the sport and security, to access the sites best suited for beginners, to be under the control of an experienced instructor and enjoy its knowledge, and finally perform in the state of the art, to limit the risks associated with bad or acquired defects of knowledge in your future practice of BASE jumping or Paralpinisme.
What are the prerequisites?Having carefully considered the consequences (personal, family, work) risks related to the practice of BASE jumping (see « Fatality List » below), have solid experience and regular skydiving (200 jumps minimum, a hundred of the past year, be patent C level), be over twenty five years old, have its own BASE jumping equipment in perfect condition.
What is the course content?Training specific material and packing of BASE jumping parachute, parachute flight training and incident management, training in good practice exits with specific workshops (free fall simulator) , the special training of natural cliffs and mountains (aerology, rope access, site assessment, organization of the jump).
Why is it better to have its own equipment for BASE jumping? It is good to consider, rightly, that if you decide to make BASE jumping, this idea was well thought out and that accordingly the purchase material suitable for this sport (see manufacturers below) is proof of that motivation, commitment and therefore this discussion. The second problem is when a student have achieved is course, without is own rig he couldn’t go foward in his base jumping skill and progress in a good way.

Matt Gerdes is probably now one of the best wingsuit pilot with Jokke Sommer. His book opens the bowels of the sport « secret » confidential, considered by most of the people as stupid and suicidal. It also brings the history of the genesis of BASE jumping, practical information and useful to all practitioners in search of knowledge and deepening. The website is very clear also provided some very good articles and demonstrations. As Matt points out « Go slowly ».
